We hope you never have any issues with your course but sometimes this cannot be helped.

If you are struggling with your course, it is a good idea to reach out for guidance. You can contact your personal tutor, the Writing and Learning Centre at the University, Student Wellbeing Services or your Students’ Union. If you would like to appeal the decision of an Assessment Board relating to your results, there are a number of things that you should take into consideration.

Getting advice from the SU
The SU can help you through the process of appeals so that you are not alone. We can help you work out what grounds you are appealing on, advise you on how to draft your
appeal letter and form, and make sure that you are fully aware of how the process works.

Do it quickly!
You only have three weeks once you receive your results to submit an appeal. During this time, it is your responsibility to check the rules and regulations, as well as collect as much evidence as you can. You must also complete an appeals form.

Get to grips with the rules and regulations
It is important that you familiarise yourself with the rules and regulations before you begin the appeals process. You can find them

When filling out the form, you must state the grounds for your appeal. Make sure you know exactly what your reasons are and how they fit into the regulations. For example, if you received a 59.24% you cannot appeal your mark due to a marginal failure to attain a higher class of degree. Ensure that your statement is clear, concise, and refers to the regulations. The form is the key part of your appeal. Make sure that it is thorough, focuses on the strong areas of your argument, but also addresses the weaker areas with clarity. Reinforce your points with evidence, such as doctor’s notes and email transcripts. Try and make sure all of the evidence is included with the original form or—if this is not possible—explain that you will submit it at a later date.

Be realistic about the outcome
In most cases, a successful appeal means you can resubmit the assignment, resit the exam or repeat the year. It will not automatically mean your grade is raised. You will usually have to wait several months for the outcome of your appeal. In the meantime, you can continue to study as usual. Your appeal will initially be looked at by the Chair of Appeals Committee and the Registrar. They will decide if your appeal complies with the regulations. If it passes onto the next stage, it will be given to the Appeals Committee to consider. 

You will then be invited to the committee meeting. You may bring a friend, family member, or Students’ Union staff member for support. If the Committee accepts your appeal, it will ask the Chair of the Examination Board to review the original decision. If you are unsuccessful, consider your next steps. You have the right to request a review of the decision. You should notify the Secretary of the Appeals Panel within one week of notification of the outcome of the appeal. Remember to specify why you feel that the decision should be reviewed.

If the decision of the Appeals Panel is reviewed and you still believe your appeal has not been managed in a satisfactory manner, you may be entitled to take your appeal to the Office of the Independent Adjudicator for Higher Education.
